The police yesterday appealed to motorists to avoid overtaking unless the road is clear after 30 people were injured in a two-vehicle collision on Grants Pen main road in St Thomas.

Head of the Police Traffic Division, Senior Superintendent Calvin Allen, told theJamaica Observer that there was an indication that the driver of a Mazda Premacy motor car was overtaking at the time it crashed with a packed Toyota Coaster bus at approximately 11:00 am.

The car was travelling towards Morant Bay from Kingston, while the bus was heading in the opposite direction.

Both drivers were among those taken to hospital.

According to the police traffic chief, the driver of the Coaster bus, who had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters, tried to avoid the collision.

He said, too, that based on the impact some amount of speeding must have been taking place.

The senior superintendent, while noting that motorists should not overtake at an intersection, on a bridge, nor in a corner where they are unable to see ahead, urged drivers to desist from putting the lives of other road users at risk.
